Dar es Salaam cleanup - Tanzania

Tanzania's biggest city and former capital Dar es Salaam lies on the shores of the Indian Ocean and would be one of the most beautiful cities in the world. However, 3.5 million kilograms of plastic are produced there every day—that’s half a kilogram per person per day. Only 30% of Dar es Salaam’s waste is disposed of properly. The rest lands in the sewers, streets, the forest and, of course, the numerous beaches.

With a population growing at a rate of 8% per year, a very low environmental consciousness in the country, and a plethora of poorly managed private waste companies, the trash problem is only accelerating.

But there are a few Tanzanian individuals working to create a cleaner, more environmentally conscious future for the country.

For international Earth Day, Valentin @pixpallutt organized a cleanup operation at Kawe Beach, bringing together 27 volunteers who managed to pick up and dispose of over 1,000 kilograms of trash. With the help of the Hakuna Takataka initiative and the Zionzuri Ecovillage Team, the volunteers learned about the impact of their trash production and were inspired to carry out regular cleanups in the future.
